Pre-Safari Preparation Program

Many hunting clients arrive on safari with little or no pre-safari preparation, and still shoot their animals – but this is not ideal.

The experienced dangerous game hunters normally prepare well for their safaris.

To optimize your success, you need to concentrate on the following aspects prior to arriving on your safari:

A. Selecting the Right Weapon, Ballistics & Ammunition

  1. On hunting buffalo, elephant and hippo, the rules are simple:

    • The minimum calibre you can use legally during this hunt is .375 calibre or 300 grain bullet.

    • Use the biggest calibre with which you are confident and can shoot accurately at 10-30 metres on elephant and 25-100 metres on buffalo and hippo.

    • Much more important than muzzle energy are - bullet weight, permanent wound channel size and knockdown power. Many hunters look first of all at optimum muzzle energy and arrive with rifles they cannot shoot with confidence

  2. Once you have booked your safari, we will communicate with you with regards to selecting the best rifle-and-cartridge combination based on the rifle calibres you might already have in your arsenal and for the animals you want to hunt - or you can hire one of our rifles.

B. Shooting Competency

  1. Unlike hunting on other continents, the animals where lions and other big carnivores are present don’t offer you much time to make your shot. They are constantly alert for their own survival, and therefore tend move off at the slightest hint of danger.

  2. Once you have booked your safari, we will send you a training program to hone your shooting skills.

C. Bullet Placement

  1. You need to study the internal anatomy of the animals you are going to hunt. We will send you diagrams on bullet placement for the animals you book. Study this, and find as many photos of your target species and visualize shot placement on all the animals in the photos

D. Behaviour Studies and General Knowledge of your Target Species

  1. Do as much research and studies about the animal species on your target list.

  2. We will also send you additional information on each species you intend to hunt.

  3. On arrival prior to going out to hunt, we will do Power Point Presentations on your list of target animals – with specific focus on the Big 5, Hippo and Crocodile

E. Your Fitness Levels

  1. There is however a very simple rule with elephant and buffalo hunting -  the more miles / kilometres you will be able to walk per day (often under trying conditions) the better your chances on success and on taking good trophies

  2. On buffalo we walk on average 15 km per day in hilly or relatively flat country. On elephant you can easily double the distance per day. We leave the camp in the mornings before daybreak, and return to the camp after dark.

  3. Try to work up to a program at home where you can walk at a brisk pace for about 5-8 km at a time, then shortly before your arrival you might double this distance on a few occasions - do this wearing your hunting boots!

Our Commitment to You!

We are constantly monitoring animal movements and their activity patterns in our over million hectares of hunting area.

On a permanent basis we have specialized game scouts out in the total hunting area collecting scientific data and making observations on all species, but more so on the flagship species – elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard.

We know the territories and home ranges of the leopards and lion prides of our different areas, the hide-outs of individual big old elephants, buffalo bulls. We also study the movements of the breeding herds, we study the composition of the herds, and the population dynamics.

When you arrive in the hunting camp, your whole safari is already planned like a military operation, in order to optimize success on your hunt.

It is important for us that you have success as a happy customer with your full bag of animals!
