In the months of October and November, the older elephant bulls come out of hiding to claim their breeding rights in the breeding herds. They will stay with the breeding herds until February-March. Thereafter they go back into hiding, normally with one or 2 askaris.

These older elephant bulls are as a rule older than 43/45 years of age and carries much bigger tusks. They earn their breeding rights based on body size and size of their tusks

Bear in mind that an elephant bull doubles his tusk weight at 43/45 years to age 57/58 years.

You can expect to hunt an elephant with tusks in the 50-60 pounds category.

These are the elephants that you will encounter in the Early Season hunt as we still find some of the big elephant bulls in the 43-58 year age group with the breeding herds.

During the hunting season from April to mid-October, you will find younger than 43 year old bulls with breeding herds, although very few females come into oestrus in this period. Otherwise you will find the younger bulls in batchelor herds.
